request from david horvitz: "i am in the photo festival at arles, france this year. it starts next monday. i will turn my hotel room into a 'bootleg' 'satellite' exhibition space to the festival. it will be in the atrium hotel. the rules are:

mail me a 'copy' of a photograph by a photographer who either: inspires you, compels you, produces thought in you, interests you, articulates itself within a certain discourse that engages you, etc...

a 'copy' can be: b/w photo copy, color photocopy, print out from computer, fax, a photograph you took of it, etc...

on the back of the envelope, write: a) your name, b) where you are from, c) the photograph's name, d) any of the photograph's info (title, date, location, etc...)

it can be any photographer. famous photographers, or your friends.

the show will be up from the 3rd of july to the 10th of july. things can be late. i will leave the 'exhibition' inside my exhibition at the festival. so there will be an after-life. the festival is on for the whole summer. so this can come show up a month or two later, and miss the hotel, but still find there way in."

the 770 show • eric william carroll

for the 770 show, eric william carroll foraged through the adobe book store stacks in search of old science textbooks. he likes how photography is used in a "matter-of-fact information delivery service" in those kinds of books. in the end, the beauty of the cover of "the milky way" by bart & priscilla bok won out. eric's been working on his own grand unification theory through images, both found and made, and he is continually drawn to idea of the 'cosmic sneeze'.

guest blogger • arden sherman • the 770 show

from san francisco's sunny mission district, this week's posts are from curator arden sherman's current project, the 770 show, where seven artists were invited to spend time in an iconic bookshop's stacks, discovering the wealth of ideas that present themselves when organization does not follow tradition. from the huge quantity of subject matter on hand, the artists mined the bookstore for images and responded to the found pictures through photography. taking up the complicated idea of order and organization through the simple act of selection and interpretation, the site acted as an integral part of staging the exhibition. throughout the week, arden will be posting the artists' work and projects from the 770 show in this online installment.

if you're in nyc this is not to be missed tonight/this weekend. billy rennekamp's 'winwin' at CLEOPATRA's. "rennekamp has been collecting and creating a variety of sports balls and equipment...the artist's exhibition includes a video game in addition to videos. largely influenced by the writings of johan huizinga and roger caillois, rennekamp's work is mainly concerned with the generation of games through play within pre-established formal systems, ie. cheating." full details are here.

pierre leguillon presents diane arbus

'pierre leguillon presents diane' arbus is an exhibition that includes hundreds of photos from abrus's days as a commercial photographer in the '60s and 70s. "all arbus’ photos are shown in their original social and political context, in the pages of original magazines...the retrospective, which was put together by the french artist pierre leguillon and is presented as a work of art/exhibition/collection, also encourages us to reflect on these aspects and on the relationship between the original and the copy." read more about the project here.

Art Fag City

James Turrell and Alice Aycock Face off on Google Maps! Which artist has the largest number of public sculptures? Art Fag City will pit artist James Turrell and Alice Aycock against one another, readers searching for works captured on Google Maps. At the end of the day a map locating the sculptures will be posted to the blog, as well as a Twitter word visualization of commentary during the competition. Wikipedia results for the two artists will also be updated. May the most archivable artist win!

(This project was inspired by a series of posts by Greg Allen on Richard Serra sculptures located on Google Maps).

4–8pm
ASDF

With Mylinh Nguyen sitting in the gallery and David Horvitz chatting live from Golden Age in Chicago, ASDF will make available an ephemeral show of 48 artists existing for only 4 hours. Each art work will be available, one at a time, for only 5 minutes. The works will be sized to print and available for download (also including instructions so that viewers may print the works using basic consumer technologies). After the 4 hours are up all the original files will be deleted.

8–10pm
Closing Party

Let’s celebrate. We'll be projecting documentation from the exhibition, drinking beer, and overall having fun. Join us!

Platform For Pedagogy

Platform for Pedagogy will make themselves available to gallery visitors for casual conversation. Near the end of their residency they will deliver a formal two-part talk. The first will be an incomplete historical overview of public lectures in New York City; the second will attempt to locate an immaterial, networked subject in the phantom audience of the lecture hall.

Humble Arts Foundation

Amani Olu and Jon Feinstein will be replicating their daily process of running Humble Arts Foundation. This will include live editing, design, and curatorial practice for all of their online projects, as well as a steady dose of g-chatting.

Sunday 22 March

UbuWeb

Danny Snelson will give a functional tutorial of online archiving. He, along with a few other members of UbuWeb's international network, will present digitization strategies in a variety of media for the benefit of would-be bootleggers and the technologically curious alike. Meanwhile, an artist-curated selection of sound and video from the archive will be enjoyed.

Loshadka

No one can be sure exactly what Loshadka will do for their 4 hours in the gallery.

In a performance that enacts a recent history of data compression and transmission techniques, I Heart Photograph will attempt to assemble the world’s largest archive of photographs transmitted via fax.

In a performance that enacts a recent history of data compression and transmission techniques, I Heart Photograph will attempt to assemble the world’s largest archive of photographs transmitted via telefacsimile in just four hours.

Anyone is invited to send one photograph by fax machine during the hours of 12–4pm EST—temporarily replacing the digital means through which work is typically submitted to the blog.

Of particular interest is the relationship between data transmission techniques and their resulting forms—the fax machine and scanner will be considered collaborators in the creative process, performing alterations to the photographic content, and essentially re-authoring its visual form. Every single photograph received by fax during the 4 hours will be cataloged, scanned, and immediately posted on iheartphotograph.com.
