"rennekamp has been collecting and creating a variety of sports balls and equipment...the artist's exhibition includes a video game in addition to videos. largely influenced by the writings of johan huizinga and roger caillois, rennekamp's work is mainly concerned with the generation of games through play within pre-established formal systems, ie. cheating." full details are here.

rosemarie fiore

another nice project by rosemarie fiore, long exposure photographs of atari, centuri, and taito video war games from the 1980s. as rosemarie explains: "the photographs were shot from video game screens while i played the games. by recording each second of an entire game on one frame of film, i captured complex patterns not normally seen by the eye." see an earlier post about rosemarie's great firework drawings here and even more of her work here. oh and thanks to asha for this link.

adriaan van der ploeg

i quite like this project by dutch photographer adriaan van der ploeg called LMIRL, which stands for let's meet in real life. the pictures are all members of online-gaming communities in holland and belgium, and the titles for each portrait are their screen names. as his gallery puts it so nicely in the press release, the photographer "lured young men and pubescent boys away from their computers and took pictures of them. the gamers' disconnected gaze, bloodshot eyes, chapped lips and their pale, impure skin are reproduced razor-sharp in the photographs and do not really flatter their objects." see more of adriaan's work here. and for those of you in zürich, an exhibition is of this work is up at haas + fischer through may 26th.
