Gwenneth Boelens

Hand-Wall, 2007, 16 mm film (original) or digitized on monitor, duration 4 min 35 s
"Scanning the environment by eye-sight is an essential characteristic of Boelens’ work and taken literally in her filmic work Hand-Wall. As if to ascertain over and over again the limitations and restrictions, a person’s hand wanders along the walls and the windows of an undefined room. As the eye follows this movement a loose impression emerges – a feeling of the space that nevertheless remains insecure and is additionally interrupted by the look outside." (from The Entire Business of Coming Closer press release 2008)

Installation view Klemm's, Berlin

Negative. Rather than Truth, 2010, wood from reproduction table, ceramic notepad, magnifying glass, metal, crayon on glass, ink-jet prints, 68 x 58 x 74 cm   "Negative. Rather than Truth alludes to the idea of a source image through a handmade negative. The title refers to its status; it is an attempt to get to a distillment of reality. It did not yet materialize as an image; it rather precedes the image."

hito steyerl • strike

"originally, strike workers were excess laborers in the early soviet union. the term is derived from the expression 'udarny trud' for 'superproductive, enthusiastic labor' (udar for 'shock, strike, blow'). now, transferred to present-day cultural factories, strike work relates to the sensual dimension of shock. rather than painting, welding, and molding, artistic strike work consists of ripping, chatting, and posing. this accelerated form of artistic production creates punch and glitz, sensation and impact. its historical origin as format for stalinist model brigades brings an additional edge to the paradigm of hyperproductivity. strike workers churn out feelings, perception, and distinction in all possible sizes and variations. intensity or evacuation, sublime or crap, readymade or readymade reality—strike work supplies consumers with all they never knew they wanted." more here.

red channels • as a crowd gathers

"as a crowd gathers is a selection of video essays constructed through an autonomous collective approach to research. of interest are the ways artists and social theorists, as well as evolving media and technology, have attempted to understand, represent, and control the potential of crowds. the crowd is a social relation that is never separate from artist/researcher/theorist. this is one potential manifestation of a co-studied genealogy of crowds, affect, and cinema; historical and represented. toward new understandings, crowds, collectivity, and its affective political potential, we think of our work together as studied experiences and repetition of new social forms we want to express in the world." more here.

liam gillick • everything good goes

"liam gillick’s video everything good goes is set in new york in 2008. an artist is preparing and editing a series of texts and recording of lectures that he presented at unitednationsplaza in berlin. as he reworks the contents of the lectures, he is at the same time attempting to construct a 3D computer model of the film set of tout va bien by jean-luc godard and jean-pierre gorin. the process is filmed and co-directed by laurent vacher, catherine camille cushman and stephen blaise. tout va bien may be seen as godard’s homage to the leftist, activist spirit of 1968, but also, according to critics at the time, questions the purpose of a revolutionary film in a bourgeois society." more here.

discourse • the photographic universe

from 'the photographic universe' conference at parsons the new school for design march 2-3, 2011. "it is important to reflect on this current moment–with the rapidly increasing permeation of photography throughout contemporary life–on what is the importance of photography as a specific medium or discipline from the perspective of a practitioner, user, pedagogue, technologist, historian, among others. furthermore, how can we evaluate contemporary culture within the expanding photographic field while speculating the future of images?" more here.
