farrell brickhouse

i knew farrell from days spent on the street in front of my studio at 65 w bway - everybody on the block knew farrell. he was quite a painter and not only did he have great tales about belushi the rest of the saturday night live cast descending on the block to have a snowy evening - but he had beaten our landlord out of paying rent and had won an extraordinary terms from him with his electric persitance - he got to live there. west broadway between murray and warren became farrell's block. i can still hear him screaming from half a block away at my brother because he had beeped his horn for me up on the 3rd floor. he was right. farrell , who is still an amazing painter , moved to warmer pasteurs on staten island several years ago - the block misses him - but i just came across some images of him - and the studio during his west broadway days and his presence came rushing back - and realized he is also quite a photographer and collector of photos more from farrell's "book of sources" album can be found here

christopher wool

christopher wool is an absolute master of many media but his greatest source of inspiration is likely the black and white photograph roughly printed by a xerox machine. his web site breaks down the various uses of black and white across the media spectrum. more here .

valie export

in 1968 the austrian artist Waltraud Hollinger changed her name to valie export. export was the name of a popular cigarette brand. and in naming herself after a cigarette she seemed to want to light herself on fire with her work to keep up with other rather extreme viennese actionist artist of the time (people like günter brus, otto mühl, herman nitsch, and rudolf schwarzkogler ) who were cutting off limbs and whatnot to escape the bourgeoise or enter the annals of history. with her new name , valie export sought a new identity that was, she says, not bound “by her father’s name (lehner), or her former husband’s name (hollinger).” more here

jim campbell

I first saw a work by jim campbell in 2001 at the bitstreams show at the whitney it was his picture of harry nyquist and it really stole the show. you have to kind of see them in person , because they function as much as a piece of sculpture or relief as it does an image. it is both. but the piece has stuck hard in my head ever since. if you get a chance to see one of his works in person or buy one one - do it.
