Making Time : Adam Bernales

Do you have a day job? What is it?

Yes, I help run a small book shop in East LA and typically work other small jobs, waiter, cashier, census enumerator.

Do the people you work with know you are a photographer?

I don't think anyone has ever known aside from the book store.

Does the work you do during the day affect your personal work?

Yes, though I wouldn't know how.

If you could rearrange your time, what would be the ideal balance between your personal and professional work?

I'm not sure there is an ideal balance, it might be interesting if they were the same. If I could rearrange my time I would try to do more work of any kind.

@600

on november 4th 2008, mus-mus invited photographers from around the world to take a photo at the very same moment, @600 internet time (8:24 am here in nyc). looking through the archive of photos, part of the fun is seeing what so many people from around the world were doing all at the same exact moment, though i have to admit, i was particularly enamored by some of the work by my fellow americans, like lucas blalock, cara phillips, and jason fulford (all seen above). have fun visiting the full archive of @600 images right here.

ian haig

behold australian artist ian haig's men of the internet project. "a web project which consists of a compilation of found images of the cornerstone of any good teen movie: computer nerds. 'men of the internet' presents the idea of the computer nerd as a species of human that have had their bodies literally transformed and modified as a result of prolonged computer use. a collection of real life altered physiognomy and biological/technological modification: bigger brains, protruding craniums and enhanced eyesight with enormous glasses." see the whole project right here.

submit your work

i heart photograph is excited to announce its latest exhibition...and you are all invited to participate in this open call for work. february 22, 2008 is the deadline for submissions. get all the details and submit your work at: aphotographofnewjersey.com

to get you thinking: "are ideas about place dramatically different since the internet has allowed us to participate in culture on such a global scale? despite the endless stream of information and images available through mass media, are there limits to how we perceive, imagine, and understand the world? exactly how do you picture new jersey? what would you say about it in a photograph?"

responses will be included in the exhibition "is it possible to make a photograph of new jersey regardless of where you are in the world?" curated by i heart photograph for the municipally supported non-profit pierro gallery and made possible by funds from new jersey state council of the arts, a partner agency of the national endowment of the arts.

reading room • this is a magazine

this is a magazine is an online visual extravaganza edited by andy simionato and karen ann donnachie. graphics flash before you, photography and design seem more bizarre and fun than usual. the online magazine has existed since 2002 and once a year they even publish a print compendium of what they've been up to on-screen. see the entirety of issue #20 here.
