day 7

This is a collaboration between Leslie Grant and Warren Hill. Leslie sent Warren photographs each day, and he responded with a song. Then Warren sent Leslie a song, and she responded with a photograph...

Dear Warren, This is from my new collection: photographs of flower arrangements. These are so hard to find. Be on the lookout for me, will you?

Zungo - Nina Simone (Compilation LP, Up Front Records, 197?)

Dear Leslie, The four of us drove around at night while you two tried to sing him to sleep and I remembered when my parents used to sing to me. The whole country vibrates with explosions and still a mother will sing to her baby. Lullaby - Cao Ngoc Phuong (Cry of Vietnam, Compassionate Arts of the Fellowship of Reconciliation LP, no catalog or date)

day 6

This is a collaboration between Leslie Grant and Warren Hill. Leslie sent Warren photographs each day, and he responded with a song. Then Warren sent Leslie a song, and she responded with a photograph...

Dear Warren, I love this exploration of a place - then and now. And that the photographs and text are mismatched – document and fiction. Wytske van Keulen

Alpufzug - Jodlerklub Thun

Dear Leslie, Remember what I said on day three about melancholy music? This is the type of stuff that's hard to listen to when the cold wind is blowing the trees outside your window. It should be a hot summer night for this type of song. But I'm excited about it, since hopefully those nights are coming and I bought it this morning for $1. The outro yodel type yelps are rad. Juventina De Gracia - Canta Lucy Jaen con Accordeon de Alfredo Escudero (Folkorico Aires Tablenos 45 - PP 133)

day 5

This is a collaboration between Leslie Grant and Warren Hill. Leslie sent Warren photographs each day, and he responded with a song. Then Warren sent Leslie a song, and she responded with a photograph...

Dear Warren, Do you remember Judith, my Dutch friend who lived in NYC for a bit one summer? I’m not sure if you met her or not. She’s the one I swapped apartments with a few summers ago, and that’s when we figured out we’re so similar, like the mirror for each other. These three photographs are from a series called &Leslie were funded by, and shown by permission of, the BouwinBeeldprijs. Judith van Ijken

Tomorrow - Dino Valente (Self Titled LP, Epic Records, 1968)

Dear Leslie, Found this in a used book store on a recent trip through Nashville. Strange, cause that's a pretty far way from the Inuit of Northern Quebec. There's a bunch of videos on the internet of groups of guys still playing this kind of music in tiny cabins. Apirqusupagit (Marry Me Though I Am Not Rich) - The Sikimiut

Found Photograph, Vienna, Austria

day 4

This is a collaboration between Leslie Grant and Warren Hill. Leslie sent Warren photographs each day, and he responded with a song. Then Warren sent Leslie a song, and she responded with a photograph...

Dear Warren, I was given this handmade book by a Dutch student in The Hague last fall. There’s a calm intervention in these photographs where they are cut and crumpled, but you're still kept at a distance. Sam van Grinsven

Up In My Mind - Idy Lynn (Columbia Records 45, 196?)

Dear Leslie, Have I sent you any Gene Clark records? I think you'd really like him since you like Gram Parsons so much. California country folk rock in the 1970s. Like Parsons, he was in the Byrds too. The True One - Gene Clark (No Other, Asylum Records LP 7E-1016, 1974)

Hannah Mooy, student at Parsons The New School for Design

day 3

This is a collaboration between Leslie Grant and Warren Hill. Leslie sent Warren photographs each day, and he responded with a song. Then Warren sent Leslie a song, and she responded with a photograph...

Dear Warren, I remember looking at these photographs with you years ago, and we both liked them so much back then. The order and the absurdity. Lynne Cohen

Nous Avons Tant Parle - Areski & Brigitte Fontaine (L'Incendie LP, BYG Records, 1974)

Dear Leslie, It's rained so much here this spring. It's hard to listen to music that isn't melancholy, it just doesn't fit in with the mood. This guy moved from Canada to try and make it as a musician but don't think he quite did. The back up vocals are real pretty. On Cherry Mountain - Jack Schechtman (Columbia Records LP - KC 31339, 1972)

Antonia Basler, student at Parsons The New School for Design

This is a collaboration between Leslie Grant and Warren Hill. Leslie sent Warren photographs each day, and he responded with a song. Then Warren sent Leslie a song, and she responded with a photograph...

Dear Warren, Could you imagine that this is what Los Angeles looks like at night? So quiet, the opposite of James Ellroy’s lurking shadows. Henry Wessel

Dirge of the Sea Gods - Norma Lyon (The Music of Norma Lyon LP, Private Release, 1968)

Dear Leslie, This song is a traditional love song from the northern Sudan. I love songs with whistling or moaning and this has both. Khaifi Hun (Have You Forgotten) - Abdel Karim El Kabli (Afrotone Records, STLP 500)

day 1

This is a collaboration between Leslie Grant and Warren Hill. Leslie sent Warren photographs each day, and he responded with a song. Then Warren sent Leslie a song, and she responded with a photograph...

Dear Warren, Have you seen these photographs before? Small town Texas football. I especially like this pair that shows the players ripping through hand drawn signs. Geoff Winningham

2+2=? - Bob Seger System (Ramblin Gamblin Man LP. Capitol Records, 1968)

Dear Leslie, This is my favorite soul song these days. I know the lyrics are kind of cheesy but something about it gets me so bad. Sounds like the perfect last slow dance of the night. Controlled By Your Love - Helene Smith (Lloyd Records 45 - 009)

the michelle du bois project

the michelle du bois project by zoe crosher and leslie grant explores the vast archive of tourist photographs, family snapshots, and pornographic images of an american woman who traveled in japan as a prostitute in the 1970s and 80s. as they say about the project, "these casual and amateur snapshots of her posing throughout the pacific rim propose a complex of disparate but interrelated discourses, including notions of the archive, the role of photography in relation to narrative, story-telling, and personal identity, the politics of private and public..." see more here and here.
