archive • crashed cars of kuwait 2005

a flickr user named psycho milt spent a few years taking pictures of crashed cars he came across in kuwait, then wrote a little story about each one. it's a grisly, bizzare collection. see more here.

penelope umbrico

some interesting projects made from found photos by penelope umbrico. the top is a detail from suns from the internet where penelope unearthed 541,795 pictures searching for the word 'sunset' on flickr, exploring the ubiquitous portrayal of this natural form in digital space. the bottom is from her project honeymoon suites which playfully deconstructs the notion of romance in marketing materials. here she takes very small fragments from horizons depicted on various honeymoon resort brochures collected at a wedding convention. see more of penelope's work here. and a big thanks to asha for passing along this link.

jail finds

an amazing flickr set compiled by someone who does volunteer work at a jail in wisconsin. these were all found inside the jail's library, either abandoned inside books or on the book cart. it's compulsively interesting and culturally telling to see what people have scrawled on these pieces of paper. view the entire set here.

[all via flickr. top left: dante. what's the deal family? not to much this way but waiting. minite. minute. top right: page from a coloring book found on the women's book cart. bottom left: the back cover of an issue of jet. the ad says "limits are irrelevant to me." and "no!!" is written underneath. bottom right: discombobulated.]

stripper polaroids

these are from an interesting flickr set which karin told me about. they are polaroid portraits of women who showed up to audition for stripping jobs at a southern california club in the late '60s through the early '70s. you can take a peek at the entire collection of photos here.

camera toss!

all of these pictures are made by throwing a camera up into the air while the shutter is open. the beautiful lines recorded are created by the combination of movement and light. see thousands of glorious pics made by die hard camera tossers on flickr. and learn all about how to camera toss for yourself here. oh, and a big thanks to erik for mentioning this.

kartograf, whoever you are, marry me

came across these pictures on flickr today. woah. they are all captioned "the weird home of russian photogammetry." i can only hope that this is the same thing as photogrammetry. see the rest of kartograf's photostream here.
