william laven • war models

not only do these photos by william laven look amazing, they also have political significance. they are unassembled toy model airplane kits of the kinds of aircrafts being flown in the current iraqi war. you can see more of them here.

jenny rydhagen

i thought these pictures by norway-based photographer jenny rydhagen were intriguing. the abstract way she photographs plants is kind of great, and then their pairing with such bland domestic objects is so pleasantly weird. you can see more of jenny's work right here.

hans-peter feldmann

okay, i'm a sucker for seriality and dead-pan looking photographs. but i also really like the way hans-peter feldmann's mind works. he is represented by 303 gallery in nyc and you can see more of his work here. and big thanks to eric for pointing me in the direction of this stuff.

kristin oppenheim

kristin oppenheim is primarily known for her sound installations, but i thought these photographs of hers were interesting. many of her projects explore the connections between childhood memories and the emotions associated with them. you can see more of kristin's work here.

bas princen

i adore these photos by bas princen. he is a dutch-born artist currently working in rotterdam who was trained as a designer, is known as a photographer, and is sometimes an architect. he photographs cities and urban spaces in really thought provoking ways. peek at his book artificial arcadia here.

masao horino

okay today we have a little history lesson in japanese modernist photography. masao horino was considered one of the most prominent photographers in the first half of the 20th century in japan. he was particularly interested in putting forth the beauty of machinery and photographed tons of bridges, tanks, towers, and ships. i love the combination of image and text here. you can learn more about him on wikipedia right here.

rob hann does texas

some pleasant portraits of football players from texas by rob hann. this is part of a larger body of work where the british-born photographer roams around the united states and makes portraits of the people and places he encounters. you can see more of his work here.

trevor paglen • limit telephotography

trevor paglen is an experimental geographer. his work involves spying on the government. these are pictures of remote u.s. military bases taken with high powered telescopes. he has said this about this work: "it is easier to photograph the depths of the solar system than it is to photograph the recesses of the military industrial complex." there's a nice article about trevor here. and see more of his work here.

catherine sundqvist

as far as photos of horses go, i will admit these pictures by swedish photographer catherine sundqvist are nice. she explains them as a commentary on fashion photography and a play on the ridiculousness with which women are typically portrayed in magazines and ads. these photos won an award from v magazine, and you can read more about that here. they also feature in the recent sports themed issue of soDA mag, take a peek here.

john divola photographed these on the set of the tv show the x-files during its final season in 2002. i like their creepy sterility. see an earlier post about his amazing vandalism project here. and peek at john's website here.

stephen gill • buried

such a lovely project by stephen gill. he took all of these pictures in hackney wick, england and then buried the photographs there varying the amount of time and depth the pictures were underground. here's what stephen has to say: "not knowing what an image would look like once it was dug up introduced an element of chance and surprise which i found appealing. this feeling of letting go and in a way collaborating with place--allowing it also to work on putting the finishing touches to a picture--felt fair. maybe the spirit of the place can also make its mark." see more from this project right here. and big thanks to mike for sending me this link.

beijing, stories from a city • colors magazine

for the latest issue of colors magazine, two chinese artists, chen jiaojiao and peng yangjun, took their cameras to the streets of beijing. what they show us is a compelling portrait of a city undergoing dramatic economic and cultural transformation. alongside the kinds of photos you see here are personal narratives, and old family photo album pics. it's a really interesting read. see more from colors magazine here.

marianne bruun viero

i'm intrigued by these pictures by photographer marianne bruun viero. the ways she's playing with our spatial perceptions are interesting, and i enjoy the junky household materials too. as she says about the work: gravity forms the absolute basic for understanding our position in space...but what happens if we are presented with an image turned upside down while we are standing on our feet? are we then able to free ourselves from the perception gravity imposes?" see more from this series here.
