Lithuanian National Costume

Scans of "Lithuanian National Costume"(by Baltos Lankos), a book I have purchased in Nida at the Maxima, (the one and only supermarket here in the village). It's a collection of re-enacted photographs of people wearing 19th century national costumes of Lithuania, published in 2006. I am mostly intrigued by the strange mixture of the celebration of folk culture and it's staged presentation but also look at them with some humor.

catherine sundqvist

as far as photos of horses go, i will admit these pictures by swedish photographer catherine sundqvist are nice. she explains them as a commentary on fashion photography and a play on the ridiculousness with which women are typically portrayed in magazines and ads. these photos won an award from v magazine, and you can read more about that here. they also feature in the recent sports themed issue of soDA mag, take a peek here.

bela borsodi • white angel

as far as fashion photos go, i thought these were kind of weird and cool. they are taken by bela borsodi and they're from a spread in the italian version of glamour magazine. bela is represented by art department. you can see more pics here.

blommers + schumm • class of '98

anuschka blommers and niels schumm are dutch fashion photographers of the best sort. for this body of work, class of '98, they manage to shatter the usual illusion and fantasy of fashion work by showing us a true glimmer of terror in the eyes of a handful of young up-and-coming british models. the styling here is so totally brilliant in an abject kind of way. you can't help but wonder if these girls went on to successful modeling careers or if they were scarred for life by these pictures.

blommers and schumm have been published in blvd, purple, i-d, self service, re, and more. earlier this year a retrospective of their work was held at the groninger museum in the netherlands. they are represented by solar photography. also see more of their work here.
