the show will be up from the 3rd of july to the 10th of july. things can be late. i will leave the 'exhibition' inside my exhibition at the festival. so there will be an after-life. the festival is on for the whole summer. so this can come show up a month or two later, and miss the hotel, but still find there way in."

ph- ilosophy/otography • judith butler

"the action of the camera itself is either oddly compliant, recording, as it were, without comment, and raising no alarm, or it works as an incitement to orchestrate the scene, but also to extend the scene in time, to keep the scene going, again and again...it allows the event to continue to happen, and i would suggest that, because of the photo, the event has not stopped happening."

ph- ilosophy/otography • jean-luc nancy

"entering and exiting, that is what makes the image: appearing and disappearing...the image contains the index of its frozenness (its form, its present, its representation) and at the same time the index of movement (force, appearing/disappearing). that is also why it engages both the indefinite proliferation of images as well as each image’s isolation and enframing..."

"...a photograph is the product of an encounter of several protagonists, mainly photographer and photographed, camera and spectator....at a time in which nearly everyone possesses photographic tools–photography has become a potential event even when there is no camera visible..."

lucia nimcová

lucia nimcová's 'an african thunderstorm' project includes: "several elements such as a booklet, with an interview of a friend of mine who worked in kenya for a NGO. furthermore, collected photographs, depicting young kenyans staging themselves the way they would like to be seen. i have also transformed a well-known piece of poetry by david rubadiri–an african thunderstorm–into a stamp poem by commissioning local artisans in kenya. i want the viewer of the work to experience the use of the stamps as an important bureaucratic symbol, by means of making a stamped poem." see more here.

adam broomberg + oliver chanarin

work by adam broomberg + oliver chanarin from the series 'people in trouble laughing pushed to the ground'. as they explain: "these are photographs taken by professional photo-journalists and ‘civilian’ photographers, chronicling protests, funerals and acts of terrorism as well as the more ordinary stuff of life: drinking tea; kissing girls; watching trains. belfast exposed was founded in 1983 as a response to concern over the careful control of images depicting british military activity during the troubles. whenever an image in this archive was chosen, approved or selected, a blue, red or yellow dot was placed on the surface of the contact sheet as a marker. the position of the dots provided us with a code; a set of instructions for how to frame the photographs in this book. each of the circular photographs shown on the previous pages reveals the area beneath these circular stickers; the part of each image that has been obscured from view the moment it was selected. each of these fragments–composed by the random gesture of the archivist–offers up a self-contained universe all of its own; a small moment of desire or frustration or thwarted communication that is re-animated here after many years in darkness." see more here.

maroš krivý

"one of the strategies, how ego strengthens its value, is by exposing itself to value radiating from a monument. displaying itself for a photographic camera, a transient but exclusive relationship is constructed between an ego and a sacred object. 'i am in front of a monument' becomes 'i am a monument'. in the presented work, monuments represented on postcards were covered by mirror mosaiques. in this way, ego no longer needs photographic camera to construct a relationship with a monument. instead, ego can merge into the setting and thus literally become a monument by simply looking at itself." see more here.

day 7

This is a collaboration between Leslie Grant and Warren Hill. Leslie sent Warren photographs each day, and he responded with a song. Then Warren sent Leslie a song, and she responded with a photograph...

Dear Warren, This is from my new collection: photographs of flower arrangements. These are so hard to find. Be on the lookout for me, will you?

Zungo - Nina Simone (Compilation LP, Up Front Records, 197?)

Dear Leslie, The four of us drove around at night while you two tried to sing him to sleep and I remembered when my parents used to sing to me. The whole country vibrates with explosions and still a mother will sing to her baby. Lullaby - Cao Ngoc Phuong (Cry of Vietnam, Compassionate Arts of the Fellowship of Reconciliation LP, no catalog or date)

day 6

This is a collaboration between Leslie Grant and Warren Hill. Leslie sent Warren photographs each day, and he responded with a song. Then Warren sent Leslie a song, and she responded with a photograph...

Dear Warren, I love this exploration of a place - then and now. And that the photographs and text are mismatched – document and fiction. Wytske van Keulen

Alpufzug - Jodlerklub Thun

Dear Leslie, Remember what I said on day three about melancholy music? This is the type of stuff that's hard to listen to when the cold wind is blowing the trees outside your window. It should be a hot summer night for this type of song. But I'm excited about it, since hopefully those nights are coming and I bought it this morning for $1. The outro yodel type yelps are rad. Juventina De Gracia - Canta Lucy Jaen con Accordeon de Alfredo Escudero (Folkorico Aires Tablenos 45 - PP 133)

day 5

This is a collaboration between Leslie Grant and Warren Hill. Leslie sent Warren photographs each day, and he responded with a song. Then Warren sent Leslie a song, and she responded with a photograph...

Dear Warren, Do you remember Judith, my Dutch friend who lived in NYC for a bit one summer? I’m not sure if you met her or not. She’s the one I swapped apartments with a few summers ago, and that’s when we figured out we’re so similar, like the mirror for each other. These three photographs are from a series called &Leslie were funded by, and shown by permission of, the BouwinBeeldprijs. Judith van Ijken

Tomorrow - Dino Valente (Self Titled LP, Epic Records, 1968)

Dear Leslie, Found this in a used book store on a recent trip through Nashville. Strange, cause that's a pretty far way from the Inuit of Northern Quebec. There's a bunch of videos on the internet of groups of guys still playing this kind of music in tiny cabins. Apirqusupagit (Marry Me Though I Am Not Rich) - The Sikimiut

day 4

This is a collaboration between Leslie Grant and Warren Hill. Leslie sent Warren photographs each day, and he responded with a song. Then Warren sent Leslie a song, and she responded with a photograph...

Dear Warren, I was given this handmade book by a Dutch student in The Hague last fall. There’s a calm intervention in these photographs where they are cut and crumpled, but you're still kept at a distance. Sam van Grinsven

Up In My Mind - Idy Lynn (Columbia Records 45, 196?)

Dear Leslie, Have I sent you any Gene Clark records? I think you'd really like him since you like Gram Parsons so much. California country folk rock in the 1970s. Like Parsons, he was in the Byrds too. The True One - Gene Clark (No Other, Asylum Records LP 7E-1016, 1974)
